My work in progress (Daniel)

Ok so here's what I have of my design.  Are there any major changes I should make before I do my drawings and create my layout for tuesday?

  1. Things that still need to be remedied:
-you need a better grasp of drawing conventions as your plan fails to properly follow line weight conventions (inconsistent thicknesses, only two real visible types, etc.), fails to showcase basic elements properly (openings to the doorways, windows, etc.), fails to show where major architectural elements would be (where the windows and roof extents would happen), and fails to contextualize how the building connects to the site (pathway, siting, etc.)
-the elevations remain quite underdeveloped; even the curved elevation still suffers from the "extrusion-pop-holes-in-the-wall" condition that everyone has been warned about; the elevation on the opposite side is even more of a problem as you have raised such a high roof overhang, it begs the question of what is it protecting?
-the overhang is a problem as it does not really make sense and only makes the building even more out of scale on the site; do the columns have to be there to hold up such a thin canopy?; does the canopy really have to be there?; does putting a "porch" condition really help your design in any way?
-the right hand side of the plan (is it the East side?) looks a bit awkward if shelving and really seems strange and tight with the couch anchored against the end; think about fixing the geometry of that side as it still seems unrefined relative to the curved edge and also think about how the furnishings can be something more than accessories to the walls; your couch, shelves, and desk all seem to reinforce the walls than actually define space inside the volume
-think about refining the plan by imagining reducing the number of facets on perimeter; if you take the 7 faces on the perimeter of the plan of the building (including the curved "South face"), could you reduce it to 4 or 5 instead?; doing so would likely clean up the awkwardness of the design in plan and also make for a more defined functional layout
-rethink the material palette as it looks like you are going down a dangerous route of not thinking about the materials beyond a wallpaper on the building; think about how your dark stone works with the surrounding context and park; it is starting to seem more tied to the public washrooms by the East side of the park than something that works with the Grange house or even serve as a contrast to what is on the site
-if you were to move with what you have right now into drawings and layout, you would very quickly realize you are missing key sections, a site plan, and possibly a site section; you will also realize just how thin your elevations are so it is better to fix these design elements now before moving forward into final documentation

These are just a few of the changes that would make for a better project and justify moving forward to layout. Be mindful that drawings mean a great deal so take the time to not only develop a strong design, but also follow proper conventions. Tracing over 3D models alone does not constitute drawing. Consult Ching to ensure that you have the proper line weights, dashed lines, and orthographic drawing framework to make the drawings worthwhile.
