Crit with Stan (Erik)

These were my posters for the crit. Stan had several suggestions for me to improve.

First, my orthogonal drawings still had inconsistencies with other drawings, that needed to be fixed.

Secondly, Stan started pointing out flaws in my intent. The need for light is almost too abundant in my design, light is coming from the ceiling and the side window panes made out of frosted glass. I should remove the skylights as it detracts from the actual arched form.

He also said for me to started making physical models to understand the curved forms. The door is totally out of context to the building and could be put in any other structure. He also stated the same for the windows, they could be in better context, just like the door.

The furniture can be integrated to the arches, by flowing along the contours and almost disappearing near the top.

Lastly, the plan is quite different to the sections and elevations. It still looks very rectilinear as opposed to the curves of the arches. The concrete foundation is sort of restricting the flow of the arches right through to the ground.

I need to start thinking about my design as a whole, from its form, as opposed to placing parts within a predetermined shape.

  1. Further to Stanislav's comments:
-once the design of the envelope has been sorted out with respect to lighting effects, consider hand rendering the orthographics to highlight the intended effects
-removing the skylights and adjusting frosted glass to control light is effective; you may also consider varying the density of the wooden elements to block out the light
-continuity among the furnishing elements would be a very welcome suggestion and ideally contribute to a more holistic design; it would also lighten the mass/appearance of the benches and furnishings in the current renders
-consider the night time in your imagery and make the lights work; you are at a point where you can show these things in your project
-how does one get to the project from the site plan?; is there a walkway or do people walk on grass/mud?
-some issues with drawing convention as you cut through into the ground; why not just consider the section AA line cut through the stairs and shade through the ground condition?
-site section is decent but you will likely have to mute the hatching and line work (aside from the key outlines) of the context buildings to ensure your building stands out onthe sheet
