First Design Ideas (Mariam Elzein)

This is my first design sketch: an upper level for the writer's studio (it allows privacy for the writer and an expanded view of the place. Also, since I want to place the studio somewhere further away from the kid's playground area due to noise, I still want the writer to get a good and clear view of the kids (since the writer will be writing children books). The lower level will consist of a place for resting, book storage, and a washroom. Stairs are included to reach the upper level.

^couple of sketches I also made.. not so sure if I should expand on them or not

  1. The good part is that you are starting now and getting a better grasp of the software. That said, you have to still address a few significant issues pertaining to the design intent and the actual conveyance.
-there is no sense of where this project is situated and as a result it is difficult to imagine this as successful or not
-the intention to have a view above the ground level is a common on that students have (it's as though the first building architecture students must do is either something over the top and extravagant or is designed to be a large towering monument); please do not feel compelled to do this; think about your options to make a strong design that possibly uses the terrain rather than stairs (which waste valuable space) in your design
-you still must work on your drawing as it is clear in the attempted sectional perspective that you are not sure about what lines are actually cut lines through the building and what are convergence lines; this requires more reading of Ching to ensure you understand convention
-the computer model is very primitive and to make the most out of the media it is highly recommended that you not only continue learning the software, but for the design expression, it is recommended that you actually give wall thicknesses to the planes you have created; architects are not interior decorators so you should know to depict the walls and ceilings with widths
-I am pretty much responding to the sketch and computer model design as it is the one you spent more time on; the other options such as the slug-like form makes for a series of problems with optimization and does not create privacy (as it makes a public gathering area on its own); the other curved design really seems more like an attempt at sculpture than architectural priority, and the strange prismatic sketch not only looks to be too large, but it also seems like a form guiding a design before anything else
-for you it might be better to try drawing and digital/physical modeling and not rely on sketches as much as you have this term; you will actually learn something that will make you better and you will also get a sense of accuracy in the design which will make your project much better
