Interim Review (AC)

Taylor Swift - Blank Space
Current layout
Stan pointed out the following in the interim review:

  • Try to explore the idea of multiple levels of privacy
  • To think more about the materials I am gonna use
  • To fix the outside support of the louvers to match more with the inside aesthetics
  • The column is the center of the project. It should be displaced more from the centre so it divides the space better and make better sense of circulation, use and form.
  • Emphasize the juxtaposition between the more organic flowy geometry and the ordered louvers
  • Let the light in thru the central column in a more engaging way
  • Remove the table thing on the central column
Originally i wanted to make the column be made from translucent material so light will come via the skylight on the roof. Now i plan to make the column split into multiple arms that arch over to connect with the supports for the louver.
I'm bit conflicted with what material I should make the interior to use. I told Stan that I wanted the interior to be made from carved wood à la Snøhetta's Reindeer Pavilion but Stan wanted me to think about materials that had more plasticity, and can be molded more easily.

  1. You will likely need a couple of posters as there will be a need for more imagery to demonstrate (though not necessarily one image per characteristic):
    -the privacy/visibility through the slats
-an understanding of the materials/construction especially in the central column condition
-the approach to the building still is nothing more than what is insinuated in the "site plan"; where is the path connecting to the building?

We will have to sort out a bit more on the construction end of your project most notably the central column and floor condition. The floor is going to be about 150-200mm of concrete while I suspect that the column in the middle would NOT be solid wood but instead either slats (take a look at Office dA's Banq restuarant) or perhaps a continuation of the slats around a funnel shape (take a look at Norman Foster's Reichstag Dome but scaled down and with wood). Both would offer opportunities to play with light and make it look like you actually have a design idea beyond form for the central column piece. You might not need to "split into multiple arms" but instead still have the lighting effects (you might want to hold off translucent material though) that you were talking about. You can still achieve the plastic forms without actually using plastics or molding things. Wood works in extraordinary ways. Thin out the mass of the column piece and you will find that the design will be much stronger.
