First design sketch (Stephen)

Let me know what you think.

  1. The design intention should be more about design and less about program in this particular case. I believe a great deal of people will be talking about views from their building. What I might suggest would be to still adopt what you have already outlined as your main concept, however your main design idea my deal more with the articulation of the pieces coming off he main volume. If you develop a consistent strategy for the fractured roof condition, you will also find that it might have implications on the elevations, section, and plan that might yield interesting design results. As Baruch raised at the last studio lecture, the question of why one would wish to have a building raised or moving off the ground plane is significant - is doing such a gesture really going to be worth all the effort? Accessibility aside, the design imagery do not seem to really showcase a significant height off the ground that would create more interesting views for the writer. Your sketch seems to indicate that the building is at the maximum size - as mentioned while we were at the site, do not simply create the maximum footprint and try to fill it up. Instead look to defining your intentions and creating something interesting and then seeing how it can work within the site and constraints outlined in the brief.

As this design concept is still very primitive, the next step I would recommend is to try to put this in a scale drawing especially within the site plan. The sketches of how large your building is do not reflect the actual reality that I hope you are trying to accomplish. The site plan implies that this is quite large and would not fit within not only the site but also the constraints of the project. As everyone is expected to have their initial design ideas articulated at some scale for this upcoming week, this is a decent start so long as it proceeds to some measured refinement.
