How Not To Design Project 4 (Mitch)

I'm posting this more for the purposes of showing you guys what not to do but here's some renders of a quick design I did up this evening. While it's not an extrusion from a plan, I noticed afterwards that it looks like an extrusion from the elevation which is just as bad.

  1. Mitch is absolutely correct in his comment about extrusions. A typical symptom of weak first year designs (especially with computers) is the tendency to "design" the floor plan with a very program-centric mindset and then subsequently extrude walls. After that, the response is to "design" the elevations by simply popping holes in the walls to offer a sense of variety.
Do not do this. As Mitchell points out, this instance demonstrates an elevation-based version of this trope.
Instead think about how people would use and move through the space in 3D. Spaces do not have to be the same height throughout a building (for example, you may have a double height space to provide ample light as well as hold book shelves whereas a lower ceiling height would make sense for washrooms or even the working area). Consider how natural light and views may impart where one would wish to have windows, doors, or other openings; this makes you have to use the camera in the digital model to figure out the real experience in the building. This will effectively make you design beyond the extrusion.
