Sundial in Imaginary City (AC)

Pyramidal Sundial
The pyramidal form gives a more dynamic and interesting form
The imaginary city I received was a city which was constantly under construction and was therefore always covered in ladders, scaffolding and tarps. The concept behind my sundial was to ccontrast the constant change and chaos of the covered city with a timeless ethereal form that was revealed and permanent. I originally used a perfect cube that would embody the ideals of Platonism to symbolize harmony and perfection. deeming it to basic, i decided to switch to a more dynamic form that would draw in the viewer into the enclosed sundial via an experience of precession. The enclosure would make an experience calmness, quiet and solitude juxtaposed against the constant work and noise of the changing city. Underneath the pier there is a pool of still water that reflects the direct rays of the sun from the slit to high light numbers on the walls to indicate time.

Mitch - Sundial

Here's what I have so far for my sundial. I have text 4 which is a city split in two; one is a perpetual carnival and one is a regular city with industry, institutions and housing. After an unspecified time (I chose fall equinox), they pack up the one half of the city and move on. I've designed this sundial so that during the summer while the people are present, light funnels into the structure and is projected brightly onto a diffusion screen. As it approaches fall equinox, the light emitted by the screen fades (as the sun's altitude lowers), eventually becoming dark during the season the people are not there. The structure itself also acts as a sundial using a radial array of alternating grass and concrete.
